International Women's Day at the University of the Fraser Valley was amazing! I watched the film Miss. Representation for the first time, the film that deals with the issue of sexual objectification of women and the role that media plays. Lenghty but indeed very informative.
Following the film was a talk with punk rocker & cancer survior Bif Naked. This was the first time I heard her speak and she was phenomenal! Very witty, intelligent and full of great life experiences. It was a full house, I certainly left feeling very pumped to take on all the challenges we women face but also very encouraged to see so much strength within my community.

There is a common proverb that stems from the Holy Vedas – the tenets that laid the foundation for Hinduism – which beautifully informs us that the Stri (Woman) is deserving of all our adulation, adoration and reverence as she brings to the world not just her warmth and comfort, but success, prosperity, peace, love and joy. She is our Laxmi, the Goddess of Wealth – in the material and spiritual sense. This was how women were treated during India’s Golden Age: The Vedic Age. In India today, behind the Westernised supermarkets, the call centres, the hustle and bustle on the streets of Mumbai, the vibrant streets of Delhi, the vegetable vendor and the man selling Bhel Puris in the early hours of the night, a little baby girl and an unborn baby girl, are becoming just another statistic in India’s hidden culture of Gendercide.
